Grindels medal

In the history of science of Latvia and Baltics D. H. Grindelis (1776 - 1836) is famous as a notable pharmacist, chemist, botanist, doctor and social worker of 19th century. He is famous as an author for many research in pharmacy, chemistry and botany; he is an initiator of the foundation of the first pharmacists' organization in Russian Empire (1803); he is also a publisher of the oldest chemistry and pharmacy magazine of Russian Empire (1803 - 1810).

D. H. Grindelis was also a Professor of chemistry and pharmacy at Tartu University (1804 - 1814) and the Dean of this University (1810 - 1812). Grindelis is also famous for being the first Latvian born naturalist (if not mentioning J. Reiters of 17th Century).

Last name of D. H. Grindelis is used for the name of «Grindeks», thus dignifying in memory the first Latvian born naturalist and his contribution to the development of the pharmacy traditions in Latvia.

   In 1995 «Grindeks» founded its highest award - Grindel's medal in recognition of this remarkable personality. 
 
The medal is granted to Latvian and foreign scientists, teachers in the field of pharmacy for the achievements and contribution in the manufacture of new pharmaceuticals, for the research in pharmacy history of Latvia, for the merits in Latvian pharmacy and development of «Grindeks».

Grindel's medal is awarded annually on 9th of October, which is the Professor's birthday.

In 1996 with the support of «Grindeks» publisher's house "Nordik" published a book arranged by professor Janis Stradins "From Grindelis till today" which tells about the traditions of pharmacy and search of new pharmaceuticals in Latvia. The book gives a lot of information on D. H. Grindelis himself, his family, life, scientific and social work.

In 1995 «Grindeks» reconstructed a charnel-house of Grindelis family (built in 1781) at Martins cemetery.
